Nelson’s Furniture’s Humble Beginnings
The start of every business speaks volumes of the values that an entity lives by. Large businesses have started from the most humble beginnings and most of the times, their initial foray into the industry that they have succeeded in may surprise and inspire you. Nelson’s Furniture is no exception.
Nelson’s Furniture was started out by Co Pao, the father of Mr. Nelson Co, in 1958. He initially ventured into the upholstery business, which was known as Nelson’s Upholstery. The first shop was set up in Lacson St., near the present Tay Tung High School. Seeing the business steadily flourishing, the visionary Co Pao planned on making furniture instead of merely catering to the upholstery needs of customers.
With a resolute heart, he moved his business to the area in Lacson St. fronting Trinity Christian Church and started his furniture business with only three furniture makers. This new business also proved to be a very good training and learning experience for the then seven-year-old Nelson Co.
In 1965, after being in business for only seven years, Mr. Co purchased the C.L Montelibano property, which became their furniture shop and which eventually paved the way for the birth of Nelson’s Furniture. It became the hub where great designs were conceptualized and made into tangible furniture. Nelson’s Furniture displayed their finished products in their first store/office located along North Drive. They then transferred their display in 6th Lacson Street to gain better exposure, and after some time, they again moved to a good location fronting the present Redemptorist Church.
In 1972, Mr. Co purchased the lot beside Jollibee La Salle, and for a time being, the building became the store, office and dwelling place of the Co Family.
It was in 1990 that Mr. Nelson Co took over the family business. With sheer determination, and with the help of his children, he was able to make the business flourish, steering the business towards unprecedented success. Its range of customers steadily grew, not only in Bacolod City, but also in neighboring provinces like Iloilo, Aklan, Cebu, Manila, Coron, Palawan, and other parts of Luzon and Mindanao.
In 2007, New Nelson’s Furniture opened its showroom in Goldenfields Commercial Complex, and in 2008, the family celebrated 50 great years in the furniture business.
New Nelson’s Furniture will keep on expanding, as the reins have been handed over by Mr. Nelson Co to his children, Richard Co and Donny Co. With the thrust of the young ones to continue the legacy that their grandfather has started, New Nelson’s Furniture will soar to greater heights in the years to come.
